🛠️ Application & Prep

How To Apply

Whether you are a beginner looking for a fast makeover or a seasoned pro tackling a complex project, following these steps ensures a flawless, chip-resistant finish.

🐣The Beginner's Way

Perfect for standard wooden furniture, pre-loved items, and quick DIY updates.

  • STEP 1: CLEAN – Scrub your piece thoroughly with Fusion TSP Alternative to remove household grease, grime, and old oil. Rinse well with clean water and let dry.
  • STEP 2: PAINT – Apply 1–2 thin coats of Fusion Mineral Paint using a high-quality synthetic brush. Let dry for 1 to 2 hours between coats.
  • STEP 3: REAP THE REWARDS – Fusion has a built-in topcoat and primer! Once dry, your project is complete. No waxing or extra sealing is required for everyday use.

👑The Professional's Way

Crucial for exceptionally slick surfaces (laminate, glass, plastic, IKEA furniture) or woods prone to bleeding (like oak, pine knots, or mahogany).

  • STEP 1: CLEAN & PREP – Clean thoroughly with Fusion TSP Alternative. Give the surface a quick scuff sand with 220-grit sandpaper to dull any high-gloss shine and create a "tooth" for the paint to grip. Wipe away dust.
  • STEP 2: PRIME (Choose Your Shield)
    • For Slick Surfaces (Laminate/Melamine): Apply 1 thin coat of Fusion Ultra Grip. Allow it to cure for 12 hours before painting.
    • For High-Bleed Woods and Knots: Apply 1–2 coats of a shellac-based stain-blocking primer (like Zinsser BIN) to trap yellow tannins. Allow 45 minutes to dry before painting.
  • STEP 3: PAINT – Apply 2 thin coats of Fusion Mineral Paint. Offload excess paint from your brush to let the self-levelling resins dry flat and smooth.
  • STEP 4: EXTRA PROTECTION – While Fusion is highly durable on its own, you can add extra armor to high-traffic surfaces. For high-wear kitchen cabinets or indoor tabletops, apply 1–2 coats of Fusion Tough Coat. For any outdoor furniture, garden gates, or exterior projects, protect the finish against weather and UV damage by sealing it with Polyvine Exterior Varnish.

📐 Coverage

Fusion Mineral Paint contains premium, light-fast pigments that offer incredible opacity and spread. Use this standard UK metric guide to purchase the correct jar size for your upcycling project.

Sizes

Tester Pocket Pot (37 ml)

  • Covers approximately 0.9 sq. m (~10 sq. ft.)
  • Ideal for small decor accents, picture frames, and colour testing.

Standard Pint Jar (500 ml)

  • Covers approximately 7 sq. m (~75 sq. ft.)
  • Ideal for a standard chest of drawers, a large sideboard, or a medium dining table.

Understanding Dry Times vs. Cure Times

  • Touch Dry Time: Feels dry to the touch within 30 minutes.
  • Re-coat Window: Wait 1 to 2 hours before applying your final layer.

VS

  • Full Acrylic Cure: Because Fusion is a 100% acrylic resin formula, it takes 21 days to cure to its maximum rock-hard durability. Handle the furniture gently and avoid scrubbing or water contact during these 3 weeks. Once cured, the surface becomes completely waterproof and washable.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a topcoat or wax with Fusion Mineral Paint?

No. Fusion is uniquely formulated with a built-in topcoat and primer, meaning it dries to a durable, non-porous, waterproof satin finish all on its own. For standard household furniture, no extra sealing is required. However, for extreme high-traffic surfaces like kitchen cabinets, or for outdoor furniture, adding a specialist protector like Fusion Tough Coat (indoors) or Polyvine Exterior Varnish (outdoors) is recommended.

Can I use Fusion Mineral Paint straight over IKEA or laminate furniture?

Slick, factory-finished, or plastic surfaces do not have a natural pore for paint to cling to. To ensure your paint never chips or scratches off laminate, give the piece a quick scuff-sand with 220-grit sandpaper, clean it with Fusion TSP Alternative, and apply one base coat of Fusion Ultra Grip primer. Let the Ultra Grip cure for 12 hours before applying your Fusion paint.

Why is my Fusion paint leaving brush marks?

Fusion is a 100% acrylic paint that dries relatively quickly. If you keep brushing over paint that has already started to set, it will leave textures and lines. To get a spray-like, flat finish, we highly recommend using a premium, soft synthetic brush from the ClingOn brush range. Fine ClingOn filaments hold the perfect amount of paint and allow Fusion’s self-levelling resins to flow flawlessly, leaving a virtually brush-stroke-free finish. Avoid "over-working" or re-brushing areas you have already painted.

How do I clean and care for my ClingOn brush after painting?

ClingOn brushes are uniquely designed to be stored wet, but they still need a proper deep clean between projects to remove paint trapped near the ferrule. We highly recommend using Scrubby Soap to wash your brushes. Made with natural oils, it gently removes dried acrylic paint while keeping the synthetic filaments perfectly smooth and supple. Simply rub your wet brush directly over the soap bar to lather, rinse under warm water, and enjoy your choice of three beautiful, fresh fragrances.

How do I stop knots and wood stains from bleeding through Fusion paint?

Certain woods like mahogany, cherry, or unsealed pine knots contain natural oils (tannins) that bleed through water-based paints, causing yellow or pink stains to appear. Because Fusion is water-based, it cannot block these oils on its own. To trap them permanently, apply 1–2 coats of a shellac-based primer (such as Zinsser BIN) to the surface before painting.

How long does Fusion take to dry before I can use my furniture?

Fusion dries to the touch in about 30 minutes and can be recoated after 1 to 2 hours. However, there is a big difference between "dry" and "cured." It takes 21 days for the acrylic resins to fully cure to their maximum, rock-hard durability. You can use your furniture gently after a couple of days, but avoid heavy use, scrubbing, or leaving standing water on the surface during the 3-week curing window.
