Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, following these simple steps will ensure a flawless, long-lasting finish on your project.

🐣 The Beginner's Way

Perfect for first-time crafters looking for a quick and beautiful makeover.

• STEP 1: CLEAN - Clean your piece thoroughly with Dixie Belle White Lightning to remove grease, grime and old wax. Rinse well with clean water and let dry.
• STEP 2: PAINT - Apply 1-2 thin coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint using a high-quality synthetic brush. Let dry between coats (usually 1 hour).
• STEP 3: SEAL - Chalk paint is naturally porous. Once fully dry, protect your hard work by sealing with Dixie Belle Clear Coat (available in Flat, Satin or Gloss) or Best Dang Wax

👑 The Professional's Way

Recommended for slick surfaces (laminate, glass, plastic) or wood prone to bleeding (like mahogany, pine knots or oak),

• STEP 1: CLEAN & PREP -Clean thoroughly with with Dixie Belle White Lightning. Scuff sand the surface lightly if it is exceptionally slick, then wipe away the dust.
• STEP 2: PRIME (Bonding Boss) -Apply 2 coats of Dixie Belle Bonding Boss. This incredible all-in-one primer combines an ultra-adhesive property with a heavy duty stain blocking power. Allow 2 hours of dry time between coats and let the final coat dry for 24 hours before painting.
  • Choose White: Best under lighter paint hues and bright whites.
  • Choose Grey: Ideal under medium tones, reds, yellow and darker paint colours.
  • Choose Clear: Perfect if you plan to distress your final paint finish back to the original wood grain.
• STEP 3: PAINT - Apply 2 thin coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint.
• STEP 4: SEAL & PROTECT - Finish with Dixie Belle Clear Coat or Gator Hide for high traffic surfaces like dining tables and kitchen cabinets.

💡 Pro Tips for Best Results

• Coat Requirements:
  • Darker colours often provide complete coverage in a single coat.
  • Lighter shades or stark whites (like Cotton or Fluff) typically require 2 to 3 thin coats for a perfectly solid finish.
• The "Mister" Technique: Dixie Belle is a naturally thick paint. Lightly misting your high-quality synthetic brush with water keeps the paint flowing smoothly and extends your coverage.
• Surface Absorbency: Raw, unsealed wood or very dry surfaces absorb more paint on the first coat. For slick, non-porous surfaces (like laminate, glass, or plastic), apply a base coat of Dixie Belle Bonding Boss first to guarantee maximum paint adhesion.

Do I really need to seal Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint?

Yes.  Chalk paint is naturally porous, meaning it will absorb dirt, oils and moisture if left unsealed.  To protect your beautiful finish, you should seal your completed project with either Dixie Belle Clear Coat (available in Flat, Satin or Gloss) or Best Dang Wax.  For high traffic surfaces like dining tables or kitchen cabinets, we recommend Gator Hide for maximum water resistance.

Can I paint over laminate, plastic or high-gloss IKEA furniture?

Absolutely. However, very slick or non-porous surfaces require an adhesive primer layer to give the paint something to grip onto.  For these surfaces, apply 2 coats of Dixie Belle Bonding Boss first.  Once dry, you can paint over it with your chosen chalk paint colour without worrying about peeling or chipping.

Why is my paint showing brush strokes, and how do I fix it?

Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint is naturally thick and creamy.  If it is drying too fast while you are working, it can leave brush marks.  To prevent this, use a high-quality synthetic brush and lightly mist the bristles with water using a continuous spray mister bottle.  This thins the paint slightly on the brush helping it self-level for a flawlessly smooth finish.
